Autumn has a way of changing the light.
Days grow shorter. Shadows stretch across the landscape. Interiors seem warmer as the world outside grows darker. A window illuminated at dusk suddenly feels more inviting, or perhaps a little mysterious. October reminds us that light is something we notice most when it is surrounded by darkness.
Artists have understood this relationship for centuries. Light and shadow can describe form and create depth, but they can also establish mood, direct our attention, and tell a story. Sometimes what an artist chooses not to reveal is every bit as important as what we are allowed to see.
