Ale Casanavo

My work has always naturally revolved around the human experience.

When I paint, I’m interested in capturing how we inhabit ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we connect with the world around us. In that sense, connection is a constant - it emerges in shared gestures, but also in quiet, intimate moments.

These paintings show people resting, gazing, breathing. Sometimes in contact with others, sometimes with themselves. Rest, pause, nudity, or simply holding a gaze - all become forms of deep connection. Connecting with oneself is also a way of connecting with the world. And confronting the viewer becomes a way of connecting them with themselves and with others - through the encounter with otherness.

Painting, for me, is a way of being present. Each portrait is an attempt to look with honesty, to get closer to what pulses beneath the surface, and to invite that same confrontation in the viewer. I’m interested in that tension between what is visible and what is sensed. That’s where humanity appears - and with it, connection. Because when we look at the other, we also look at ourselves. And maybe, in that exchange of gazes, something is recognised, something is embraced, something is healed.

“Just Finished”, oil on canvas, 60 x 48 inches

The last thing any of us wants to think about is garbage. But someone cleans it for us everyday, like an invisible house elf in Harry Potter. As I was walking towards my studio, I saw the garbage man so tired from a day’s work, that he perched in the hard, cold cement nook that he had somehow found in the edge of the wall and fell asleep. A large garbage can towered next to him with the plastic glimmering in the daylight. I wanted to paint him to tell his story. He had a wise face, exhausted and aged by life. I couldn’t just walk by him and needed to find a way to both acknowledge and thank him.

Where creativity begins

Art often starts young. In classrooms around the world, children connect with their creativity through colour, gesture, and play. With Bruynzeel Poster Paint, that connection becomes vivid and tangible: bold, washable colours made from 98% natural ingredients.
