Die bekanntesten Lösungsmittel sind Wasser, Terpentin und Terpentinersatz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTerpentinersatz und Terpentin\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUm einer Begriffsverwirrung zuvorzukommen, muss an dieser Stelle angemerkt werden, dass das durch Künstler:innen verwendete Terpentin eigentlich Terpentinöl heißt. Terpentin ist das ursprüngliche Balsam, welches aus verschiedenen Pinienbaumarten gezapft wird und aus dem durch Destillation das flüchtige Terpentinöl gewonnen wird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChemisch betrachtet, besteht Terpentinöl aus verschiedenen sogenannten „Terpen\" und ist aufgrund seiner guten auflösenden Eigenschaft sehr geeignet als Lösungsmittel für (Öl-) Farbe, Malmittel und Firnisse. Indem man Terpentinöl nochmals destilliert, wird der Gehalt an harzartigen Stoffen auf ein Minimum beschränkt, und es entsteht das beinahe zu 100% flüchtige „rektifizierte Terpentin\". Für Kunstmalzwecke ist es sicher ratsam, nur diese Qualität zu verwenden.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTerpentinersatz\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTerpentinersatz ist wie Benzin ein Erdöldestillat. Geruch und auflösendes Vermögen sind abhängig davon, wie viele sogenannte „aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe\" sich im Lösungsmittel befinden. Bekannte aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe sind Xylol und Toluol, die übrigens in nur geringem Maß in Terpentinersatz vorhanden sind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEs sind verschiedene Sorten Terpentinersatz erhältlich. Im Allgemeinen gilt, dass das lösende Vermögen zunimmt, je höher der Prozentsatz an aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen ist. Der geruchsarme Charakter geruchloser Terpentinersatzsorten resultiert aus dem fast völligen Fehlen aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoffe, was wiederum zur Folge hat, dass abgesehen vom Geruch auch das lösende Vermögen viel geringer ist. Talens Artists' grade\" Terpentinersatz und geruchloser Terpentinersatz sind 100% flüchtig.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTerpentin\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIm Allgemeinen hat Terpentinöl ein größeres auflösendes Vermögen als Terpentinersatz. Dammarharz beispielsweise löst sich in Terpentinöl auf, nicht aber in Terpentinersatz. Aufgrund des geringen lösenden Vermögens ist geruchloser Terpentinersatz nicht geeignet, um alte Firnisschichten zu entfernen.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eObwohl oft angenommen wird, dass alles, was aus der Natur stammt, weniger schädlich als chemisch hergestellte Produkte ist, muss an dieser Stelle betont werden, dass Terpentinöl schädlicher ist als Terpentinersatz, Augen und Haut stärker reizt und mehr Überempfindlichkeiten (Allergie) auslöst.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eVerwendung von Lösungsmittel\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIm Prinzip können beide Lösungsmittel verwendet werden, um Farbe zu verdünnen und Pinsel zu reinigen, aber es ist im Zusammenhang mit der Verdunstung und der damit einhergehenden Luftverschmutzung ratsam, in jedem Fall Terpentinersatz für die Reinigung des Materials zu benutzen.
