{"title":"Verf oplosmiddelen","description":"\u003cp\u003eOplosmiddelen voor verf worden onder andere gebruikt om vaste bindmiddelen vloeibaar te maken, om vloeibare bindmiddelen te verdunnen en om gereedschappen te reinigen. Oplosmiddelen verdampen als ze aan de lucht worden blootgesteld. De bekendste oplosmiddelen voor de kunstschilder zijn water, terpentine en terpentijn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTerpentine en terpentijn\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOm begripsverwarring te voorkomen moet worden opgemerkt dat de door (kunst)schilders gebruikte terpentijn eigenlijk terpentijnolie heet. Terpentijn is de oorspronkelijke balsem die uit diverse pijnbomen wordt getapt en waaruit door distillatie de vluchtige terpentijnolie wordt verkregen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChemisch gezien bestaat terpentijnolie uit verschillende zogenaamde \"terpenen\" en is door het goede oplossende vermogen zeer geschikt als oplosmiddel voor (olie)verf, mediums en vernissen. Door terpentijnolie nogmaals te distilleren wordt het gehalte aan harsachtige stoffen tot een minimum teruggebracht en ontstaat de nagenoeg 100% vluchtige \"gerectificeerde terpentijn\". Voor kunstschilderdoeleinden is het beslist aan te raden alleen deze kwaliteit te gebruiken.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTerpentine\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTerpentine is net als benzine een aardoliedistillaat. Geur en oplossend vermogen zijn afhankelijk van de mate waarin de zogenaamde \"aromatische koolwaterstoffen\" in het oplosmiddel aanwezig zijn. Bekende aromatische koolwaterstoffen zijn xyleen en tolueen, die overigens slechts in geringe mate in terpentine aanwezig zijn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEr zijn diverse soorten terpentine verkrijgbaar. Over het algemeen geldt dat het oplossend vermogen toeneemt als het percentage aromatische koolwaterstoffen hoger is. Het reukarme karakter van reukloze terpentinesoorten is het gevolg van het nagenoeg ontbreken van aromatische koolwaterstoffen, met als gevolg dat behalve de geur ook het oplossend vermogen veel geringer is. Talens \"Artists'grade\" terpentine (White spirit) en Reukloze terpentine zijn 100% vluchtig.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTerpentijnolie\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver het algemeen heeft terpentijnolie een groter oplossend vermogen dan terpentine. Damarhars bijvoorbeeld lost wel op in terpentijnolie maar niet in terpentine. Door het geringe oplossende vermogen is reukloze terpentine niet geschikt om oude vernislagen te verwijderen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOfschoon vaak gedacht wordt dat alles wat uit de natuur komt wel vriendelijker zal zijn dan langs chemische weg verkregen producten, moet hier benadrukt worden dat terpentijnolie sterker irriterend is voor ogen en huid dan terpentine en meer aanleiding geeft tot overgevoeligheid (allergie).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eGebruik van oplosmiddelen\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn principe kunnen beide oplosmiddelen gebruikt worden om zowel de verf te verdunnen als penselen te reinigen, maar het is aan te bevelen in verband met verdamping en de daarmee gepaard gaande verontreiniging van de lucht in ieder geval terpentine te gebruiken voor het reinigen van gereedschappen. De harsachtige geur van terpentijn wordt door veel schilders als aangenaam ervaren en daarom als reden aangevoerd om terpentijn als verdunningsmiddel voor de verf te gebruiken.
