One hundred pupils from groups 5 and 6 explored their creativity during a project organised by Cultuurplein Noord Veluwe on 15 and 16 November. After an art lesson in the classroom, the pupils transformed old sails from windmill De Vlijt in Wapenveld into a canvas for their own painted ‘molenwezen’.
Creative education inside and outside the classroom
The project began with a lesson taught by a visual arts teacher. The pupils then had the opportunity to put what they had learned into practice. Using paint supplied through the Royal Talens Foundation, they painted their own creations directly onto the old windmill sails.

Four classes from three primary schools participated in the project, involving a total of 100 pupils. The activity brought creative education out of the classroom and gave the children an unusual surface on which to express their ideas.
Connecting schools with culture
Cultuurplein Noord Veluwe connects schools with cultural organisations and professionals, bringing cultural education into the classroom. This project combined that approach with a practical painting activity led by a visual arts teacher.
Providing children with opportunities for creative learning also aligns with the broader mission of the Royal Talens Foundation, which supports schools and organisations in making creative programmes accessible to children.
By providing paint for the project, the Royal Talens Foundation supported the pupils in turning the old windmill sails into their own creative works. In this way, the activity offered the children an opportunity to experience visual arts through both learning and making.
