Creative care for young patients in Tanzania

Royal Talens Foundation donated art materials to Aisha & Friends for TPC Hospital in Tanzania, enabling trained staff to provide emotional support through creative activities to more than 25 children who previously had no access to toys or art supplies during their hospital stays.

Blending pedagogy with creative care

Aisha & Friends develops educational materials and training together with local partners in Kenya and Tanzania, focusing on life skills and building resilience in children. Their approach blends pedagogical expertise with creative methods, recognizing that play and artistic expression are essential tools for children's emotional wellbeing, especially in healthcare settings.

Training staff in child-friendly care

The organization has established a collaboration with the team at TPC Hospital's children's ward, with the primary goal of strengthening social-emotional support and creating a child-friendly approach throughout the hospital. The training program teaches staff how to engage children through play, reduce stress during hospital stays, prepare young patients for treatments and operations, and create opportunities for children to express and discuss their emotions.

From training to practice

The Royal Talens materials arrived at a crucial time. The hospital had little to no creative materials or toys available for children, making the donation particularly valuable. Following a training session on play and how to use various materials and toys, staff practiced together with the Aisha & Friends team, learning hands-on techniques for incorporating creative activities into their daily work with pediatric patients.

The art supplies now enable hospital staff to implement what they learned in training, providing sick children with meaningful creative outlets during their hospital stays.

Enthusiastic reactions from families

Most children in the hospital come from families living in poverty and don't have access to toys or creative materials at home. The introduction of quality art supplies brought visible joy to the ward. "It was wonderful to see the amazing and enthusiastic reactions from the children and their parents," shared the Aisha & Friends team.

Staff and children with their parents were present on the children's ward during the initial sessions with the new materials, creating a warm, supportive atmosphere as young patients explored creative expression, many for the first time.

Building resilience through creativity

The collaboration between Aisha & Friends, TPC Hospital staff, and the Royal Talens Foundation demonstrates how creative materials, combined with proper training, can transform the hospital experience for vulnerable children. By equipping healthcare workers with both the tools and the knowledge to engage children creatively, the project supports not just immediate wellbeing but also builds long-term resilience.
